The Copenhagen Card is a traveller’s dream come true! This cost-saving card offers free entry to over 80 top attractions in Copenhagen. Thus, making it an ideal choice for budget-conscious travellers who want to explore the city’s best sights without breaking the bank.
Originally, the Copenhagen Card was a physical card that you had to pick up at the airport or visitor centres. But thanks to technology, you now purchase it online, and it is accessed on a handy phone app online or off.
How much does a Copenhagen Card cost?
There are a few different hourly options when purchasing the card. It can be purchased for 24, 48, 72, 96, or 120 hours of use. It’s important to note that once you activate the card, the clock starts, and can’t be stopped or paused. In other words, if you purchased the 24 hours card, and you activate it at 1 pm, it will remain valid until 1 pm on the following day. So choose the best option for your travel needs and length of stay.
Also, by no means should you get the pass for the entire length of your stay. For example, we only purchased the 72 hour (or 3 day) pass, even though we were in Copenhagen for a week. During those three days, we made the most of the card by visiting as many attractions as possible, and utilizing public transit. On the days we didn’t have the card, we rented bikes, and did free activities.

By now, it’s clear that the Copenhagen Card is a budget-savvy traveller’s best friend. But just how much money can you save with the card? The answer is quite a bit! With free entry to over 87 attractions and activities, the savings can quickly add up.
For example, admission to Tivoli Gardens, one of Copenhagen’s most popular attractions, costs 140 DKK (about $22 USD) for adults. If you plan to visit several times during your trip, that can add up quickly. But with the Copenhagen Card, you can visit as many times as you’d like for free. Thus, saving you potentially hundreds of dollars.
Similarly, a single bus or train ride in Copenhagen costs 24 DKK (about $4 USD). If you plan to take multiple rides per day, the costs can quickly add up. But with the Copenhagen Card, you have unlimited access to all public transportation in the city. Thus, saving you both time and money.
But to illustrate the savings even further, I’ve crunched some numbers to show you where we used the card during our stay, and how much we saved. I’ve broken it all down for you in the next section.
Our Experience with the Copenhagen Card
I have to admit, that when we were planning our Copenhagen trip, I was hesitant to buy the card. I questioned whether it would actually save us money and be worth it. In the end, we got the 72 hour Copenhagen Card for our week long trip and I seriously can’t recommend it enough. This allowed us to do some serious sightseeing for a few days, and then spend the rest of our time relaxing or doing free activities.
Since Copenhagen is an expensive city, this card not only helped us save money, but it also saved us the time of waiting in line and buying tickets at each attraction. It also inspired us to visit more attractions, because they were already included in the pass. And in the end, those attractions ended up being some of our favourites!
May I remind you the breakdown above is for one person. So in the end we saved $190 USD for the two of us. Although we were able to save a decent amount of money with the Card, we also visited a large number of attractions. Therefore, do your research by adding up the cost of attractions you want to visit to see if it cost-effective for you!

However, if you prefer a more leisurely first day upon arrival, it might be more cost-effective to purchase a separate train ticket to the city centre and activate your Copenhagen Card later when you are ready to start exploring the attractions.
Secondly, it allows you to plan your itinerary in advance and have the card ready to use as soon as you arrive in Copenhagen. Additionally, buying the card online in advance can save you time and hassle compared to buying it on arrival.
Free Kids Cards (Ages 3-11)
Yes, it’s true! Each adult carrying a Copenhagen Card ADULT is entitled to bring up to two children, between the ages of 3-11, for free to attractions and public transport. However, children between 3-11 years old need their own Copenhagen Card KIDS (maximum two per adult), which you can get when you purchase your card.
For children between 12-15, a Copenhagen Card JUNIOR is required. But for infants between 0-2 years old do not need a card to get in for free.
Using Your Copenhagen Card
After purchasing your card, download the free app on your iOS or Android device. Then, enter the order number received in your confirmation e-mail. You can use the app offline and on flight-mode once the card has been activated. Simply scan the barcode at each attraction and present it to transport authorities as needed.
Tip: Avoid activating your card on a Monday, as a lot of attractions and museums are closed that day.
It’s important to note that the card is activated upon first use, so be sure to plan your itinerary accordingly. Additionally, some attractions may require advanced reservations, so be sure to check before heading out.

Or, stay at an Airbnb with a kitchen and cook up some of your meals, or pack picnics.

If you’re looking for souvenirs, skip the tourist shops and head to local flea markets like Ravnsborggade or Nørrebrogade. You’ll find unique items at much lower prices.
