While 2 days may seem like a short amount of time to explore all that Rome has to offer, with careful planning and efficient use of transportation, it is possible to experience the highlights of the city in a weekend getaway. From the historic Colosseum to the picturesque Trevi Fountain, you can pack your itinerary with iconic sights and delicious local cuisine. However, keep in mind that Rome is a city rich in history and culture. So after 2 days, I guarantee you will leave craving more time to fully immerse yourself in all that the Eternal City has to offer.
Where to Stay in Rome for 2 Days
But before we dive into your 2 Days in Rome itinerary, let’s decide where to stay in Rome. In Rome, there are plenty of options to suit every taste and budget. From luxurious hotels with stunning views of the city to cozy bed and breakfasts tucked away in the charming streets. Rome has a variety of accommodations to choose from. Whether you prefer to be in the heart of the action near the Colosseum and Roman Forum or in a quiet neighbourhood away from the hustle and bustle. Let’s find you the perfect place to rest your head during your weekend getaway in this historic city.
However, I will say, that exploring Rome’s attractions is made easier when you choose a central location to stay. And especially if you are visiting Rome for only 2 days, opt for a central location. Here are some of my recommendations to fit any budget.
Luxury hotels and apartments:
- Parisii Bocca di Leone 88
- Residenza Ruspoli Bonaparte (sleep in a 16th-century building that was once the home of Napoleon III).
- TB Place Roma
Mid-range hotels:
- Suite della Pigna (in a central location with incredible city views)
- Colonna Inn
- Hotel Barberini (only a 7-minute walk to the Trevi Fountain)
- Hotel City Palazzo Dei Cardinali (Great vibe & location)
Budget-friendly:
- Lilli Vatican White Domus (beautiful private apartment)
- Residenza Termini (private apartment)
- The Bluehostel (private rooms, with funky decor)
- Hotel Donatello (This is where we stayed most recently. It isn’t fancy, but it is walking distance to the train station, and the staff where very friendly and helpful).
4 Ways to Save Money & Time in Rome
To make the most of your time and money in Rome, consider investing in a Rome Tourist Card, Omnia Card, or skip-the-line tickets for Rome’s popular attractions. These options can save you both time and money by providing access to multiple sites with a single purchase. Additionally, booking a hotel with breakfast included can help you get a quick start to the day!
1. Rome Tourist Card
The Rome Tourist Card offers discounts on entry fees to over 20 various museums, tours and attractions, as well as a 48-hour hop-on hop-off bus. However, you won’t get free entry to the Colosseum or Vatican City with this card. So I don’t recommend it for this 2 day Rome itinerary. But it could be perfect for your next trip or if you have longer than 2 days. Instead, I recommend the Omnia Card that does include access to these major Rome attractions.
2. Omnia Card
The Omnia Card includes entry to Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Colosseum, along with unlimited use of public transport. These are all the attractions I recommend visiting during your 2 days in Rome itinerary. So I recommend buying this card in advance for your trip. We used it during our trip and I can’t recommend it enough. Since Rome is a busy city, this card not only helped us save money, but it also saved us the time of waiting in line and buying tickets at each attraction.
Check out this website to see if the pass includes the attractions you want to visit and, if you are interested, I recommend purchasing it before your trip. This is because the pass will be emailed to you, and then you can utilize the included transportation to get to your hotel on arrival. Keep in mind the pass is good for 3 days, and starts as soon as you scan it on your first bus or attraction, so you may want to be strategic as to when you start using the card, to get the most out of it.
In this 2 days in Rome itinerary, I will show you which attractions we used the card at.
3. Buy Skip the line tickets
Another easy way to buy skip-the-line tickets is on Get Your Guide. This allows you to bypass long queues at major attractions like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican Museums, ensuring you maximize your 2 days in Rome.
With these money and time-saving tips in mind, you can now focus on your 2 days in Rome itinerary.
4. Book a Hotel with Breakfast Included
Booking a hotel that includes breakfast can be a game-changer during your 2-day stay in Rome. This will save you both time and money while ensuring you start each day fueled up for exploring. Breakfast in Rome can be an experience in itself, but it often comes with a price tag — especially in the city center. By choosing a hotel with breakfast included, you’ll avoid the hassle of finding a café each morning, and you won’t need to worry about additional costs piling up.
With a variety of options, from fresh pastries and cappuccinos to savoury spreads, you’ll have a delicious meal right at your doorstep. This will also allow you to head straight out to your first sightseeing stop without delay. This simple addition to your stay means more time for iconic landmarks like the Colosseum or the Vatican, and less money spent on dining out first thing in the morning. It’s a smart way to make the most of your short stay while keeping your travel budget in check! With this tip in mind, I haven’t included breakfast locations in this 2 days in Rome itinerary.

No matter when you visit the Vatican, you’ll almost always find a massive line of people waiting to get in. Honestly, there’s nothing better than strutting past all the hot and bothered tourists waiting in line while you breeze through the doors! Oh, and a little tip: the Omni Card also lets you skip the line. So it’s definitely worth considering if you’re planning to visit multiple sights.

As you step inside the magnificent Colosseum, envision the gladiatorial battles and spectacles that once took place in this iconic amphitheater. After you can wander through the ruins of the Roman Forum with or without a guide. Here ancient temples, government buildings, and public squares offer a glimpse into the daily life of the Romans.
Tip for Visiting the Colosseum and Roman Forum
I’ve had the chance to visit the Colosseum three times in my life, and I have to say that the underground tour has been my absolute favorite. The experience is so much more than just a look at the ancient amphitheater. With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, you get to step into the hidden areas where gladiators once prepared for their fierce battles. Walking through the underground chambers, you can almost feel the tension in the air. Here you can imagine what it was like for these fighters, who stayed in these dark, confined spaces before emerging into the arena. The tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and mechanics of the Colosseum that you just can’t get from regular access. It’s definitely a must-do if you want a deeper, more immersive experience at one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks.
After the underground portion of the tour, your guide will give you some free time to explore the main and upper levels of the Colosseum. This is your chance to admire more artifacts, take in stunning views, and snap some great photos. Afterward, you’ll meet a different guide who will lead you through the Roman Forum. Since the Colosseum and Forum are outdoor sites, I highly recommend booking your tour for the earliest time slot possible to avoid the midday heat. It’ll make your experience much more enjoyable and gives you a head start on the crowds!
Cost: Free with Omni Card, or buy your tour ticket for €54.50 – €109.00 per person.

After immersing yourself in the ancient history of Rome at the Colosseum and Roman Forum, your next stop on day 2 of your itinerary is the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II. With its warm hospitality and mouthwatering cuisine, Trattoria Vecchia Roma promises to be a highlight of your visit to Rome. However, be warned that this restaurant is very popular, and they don’t take reservations. So either come early, or be willing to wait in a long line.
Day 2 – Gelato at Gelateria Fassi
After a delicious dinner in Rome, there’s no better way to end the evening than with a visit to Gelateria Fassi. This is one of the city’s oldest and most beloved gelaterias. Known as the “Ice Cream Temple,” Fassi offers a tempting array of gelato flavors. From classic pistachio and hazelnut to more adventurous options like tiramisu and frutti di bosco. The atmosphere here feels like stepping back in time, with its old-world charm and vintage decor. Make sure to try their signature semifreddo, a unique frozen treat that’s sure to leave you craving more.
FAQ About Travelling in Rome:
Drinking Water in Rome
Staying hydrated is key when exploring Rome, especially during the hot summer months. You’ll be happy to know that tap water is safe in all major cities in Italy, including Rome. In fact, you will find old-style water fountains around the city that you can fill your water bottles up with. The best part, is the water is ice cold, and tastes delicious. So bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at the numerous drinking fountains around the city and save money on buying bottled water.
Electrical Plugs
Italy requires European Plugs. So if you don’t already have a universal adaptor plug that works worldwide, I recommend buying this one. Not only does it work with my computer and hair curler, it has the additional four USB plugs at the top, to charge all your phone and any other gadgets!
Currency
Euros. I recommend having cash on hand, however, most major restaurants, stores and hotels accept credit cards.
When is the Best Time to Visit Rome?
When it comes to planning a short trip to Rome, timing is everything. To make the most of your 2 days in Rome, it’s important to consider the best time to visit. The peak tourist season, from June to August, may seem like an appealing time to visit, but be prepared for huge crowds and scorching temperatures.
Alternatively, visiting during the shoulder seasons of April to May or September to October can offer a more enjoyable experience with milder weather and fewer tourists. And for those seeking a truly unique and authentic Roman experience, winter is the perfect time to bundle up and explore the quiet streets. Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate, and maybe even catch a glimpse of snow on the ancient ruins. Ultimately, the best time to visit Rome for 2 days depends on your personal preferences. But with careful consideration and planning, you can make the most of your short visit to this historic and vibrant city.
We visited Rome at the beginning of October, and the weather was still surprisingly hot. It made me wonder just how intense the summer heat must be! Given the high temperatures, I’d definitely recommend visiting in the sholder seasons. During these months, the crowds thin out as families are in school, and the weather is much more manageable for sightseeing.
How to Get Around Rome for 2 Days
For those looking to maximize their 2 Days in Rome Itinerary, navigating the city efficiently is key. Rome offers a variety of transportation options. Buses, trams, and the Metro, make it easy to travel between Rome’s iconic landmarks and hidden gems. Additionally, exploring Rome on foot is a great way to soak in the vibrant atmosphere and discover charming neighbourhoods off the beaten path.
Alternatively, if you want to cover all the major sites of Rome, jump on the Rome Hop-on-Hop-Off Bus. You’ll even have the option to listen to interesting commentaries aboard the bus. But what I love about the Hop-on-Hop-Off Buses is that you can explore at your own pace. No rush, no strict schedules! Just pure flexibility and the opportunity to soak up the beauty of Rome and all its ancient history.
Is Rome Safe for Travellers?
Rome is generally a safe city for travellers, with a low crime rate compared to other major European cities. However, as with any popular tourist destination, it’s always wise to take precautions to protect yourself and your belongings. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like tourist attractions. And keep your valuables secure (ie. in a zipped-up bag or purse under your arm). I used this cross-body bag and this zip-up purse when travelling in Rome.
If possible, I don’t recommend putting your wallet or expensive smartphone in your back pocket, as pickpocketing does happen in crowded tourist areas. For men, I recommend keeping these items in your front pant pockets or better yet, a chest pocket in your jacket. And don’t leave your items unattended on transit or at a restaurant. By staying vigilant and using common sense, you can enjoy your weekend getaway in Rome without any major safety concerns.
